Peter and Nikeya Gibbs are the husband-wife duo behind Foundation Surety & Insurance Solutions, a company that specializes in providing top-notch surety bond solutions that are tailored to meet each business’ unique needs. The company prides itself on being the only minority-owned surety agency in the entire U.S. with a national footprint — they’re licensed in all 50 states.
Peter founded the business after a 32-year career with the U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA), with 18 of those years as director of the $6 billion surety bond guarantee program. “I understood that there was a need for my services, especially for small and emerging businesses.” With that in mind, Peter started Foundation Surety in October 2021, just one month after retiring from SBA.
Peter and Nikeya also pride themselves on being a veteran-friendly company. Peter served 27 years in the Army and Nikeya served 14. “We love working with veterans and trying to help them meet their goals, especially the ones in the industries that we support as a business,” said Peter.
Today, Peter serves as president and CEO of Foundation Surety, and Nikeya as chief operating officer. Together, they help provide bid, payment and performance bonds to companies who get awarded contracts and need a surety bond before they can begin their projects. And while they mostly work with construction companies, the surety insurance company also serves any business who finds themselves in need of a payment, performance or even commercial bond. But they don’t just offer bonds, they provide the cornerstone of a business’ stability.
Peter and Nikeya celebrated an exciting four years in business last October and have serviced more than 600 small businesses nationwide. “Being able to assist small businesses who are having difficulties or obstacles getting surety bonds is a daily accomplishment that we’re very proud of,” said Peter. They’re also proud to be partnered with Merchants Bonding Company, who’s a top 10 treasury listed surety company in the U.S. per the Surety & Fidelity Association of America.
Foundation Surety has leased space with St. John Properties since its founding, the first year was in a shared space, and they’ve been at their current location since 2022. Their convenient location right off the highway at Melford Town Center in Bowie, Maryland, has positioned them to help more businesses. And the property’s exceptional appearance is an added bonus.
“This space in general is very like a boutique,” said Nikeya. The duo partnered with St. John Properties to design and buildout an office space that features a conference room, private office, and coffee bar. “It gives people a sense of who we are when they walk in the door. There’s a very personable and intimate environment where they feel comfortable that they can come in and meet with us and talk in depth about their situation.”
